Meet PhysEd teacher, Lee Weismiller. He has serious guts. His version of fun is participating in the Tough Mudder competitions. Crazy, right? These hardcore 10-12 mile courses may take on a light tone with amusing obstacle names like “funky monkey” and “dirty ballerina”, but they certainly offer no place for the unmotivated. These badass events are all about testing an athlete’s mental grit, teamwork, stamina and strength to the extreme.

If I told you that Lee nailed the 17 kilometre challenge in Toronto this year after being involved in a tragic and life-changing accident, you probably wouldn’t believe me. But after dealing with pain for years on end, the support of an unloader OA knee brace  was all it took to get Lee back on his feet and back in the race

The accident that took its toll...

On June 6, 2002, Lee was riding his motorcycle when he swerved to avoid a dog and veered off the road, striking a telephone pole. The resulting injuries included a complete displaced fracture of his left femur, a butterfly fracture of his tibia and some pretty nasty cartilage damage to his left knee. Four surgeries and an extensive bout of physiotherapy later, Lee was still dealing with pain on a daily basis and very little hope that he would be able to regain his previous level of functioning.

Just when Lee had learned to accept the limitations imposed on his active lifestyle by his injuries, he came to us and we found a way to change his luck for the better. Lee was determined to run the 2012 Tough Mudder competition in Toronto despite his pain, so we recommended a brace that would help relieve his knee of pressure on the damaged surface, reduce his discomfort, and offer the stability and support he’d need to reach peak performance. Lee noticed a difference in his mobility almost immediately and was able to complete the Tough Mudder challenge without any soreness during or after the race.

 “Currently, I’m signed up and ready to roll in the 2013 Tough Mudder events in Toronto and Montreal,” Lee reports, “and I owe it all to my brace which is still in tip-top shape!
